Holy Anointing Oil

Exod 30:23-33

Here we read of the instructions given by God to Moses concerning the making of the Holy Anointing Oil, which is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Anointing Oil was used to consecrate vessels to God for use in the Tabernacle. This same mixture was used to consecrate Priests to serve in the Tabernacle and appointed Kings in the service of God to Rule over His people.

The recipe : "Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred {shekels,} and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin.

The commission

"And you shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.

The purpose

"And with it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. "You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me.

The exhortation and warning

"And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 'It shall not be poured on anyone's body, nor shall you make {any} like it, in the same proportions; it is holy, {and} it shall be holy to you. 'Whoever shall mix {any} like it, or whoever puts any of it on a layman, shall be cut off from his people.'" (NAS)

From the onset this oil was reserved for those set apart for God and anything devoted to Him and it was forbidden to be used by any unsanctified person for secular puposes. The act of anointing is still something sacred today since God wanted this practise to continue throughout the generations. The Holy anointing oil is reserved for God's kingdom of priests and to be used in accordance with the Holy Spirit, since He is the One who anoints and He is the anointing oil.
1 Tim 5:22 confirms the same sentiment namely: "Do not lay hands upon anyone {too} hastily and thus share {responsibility for} the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin." (NAS)

One thing is clear though from this passage in Exodus, and that is that God didn't want the flow of the anointing oil to stop, but for it to continue throughout the generations.

The message "hidden" in the fragrances that comprise the Holy anointing oil is that of, living holy lives according to God's righteous standards in a humble and sacrificial way.
