The Hebrew word for calamus is “qanah”, meaning to acquire, to buy, purchase, procure, recover and redeem. It was one of the ingredients in the holy anointing oil. Since it was so costly and rare and means to purchase, it represents the tremendous price that Messiah paid for our redemption, inheritance and eternal life (1 Pet 1:18-19)

Isa 43:24-25 “You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me, or lavished on me the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened me with your sins and wearied me with your offenses. "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

This fragrance is acquired from the roots of the plant, it points to God’s dealings with the roots of our sins and offences and His desire to remove sins from the roots.

Calamus is a water-plant, an aromatic reed growing in marshy places. It must always stand erect in muddy waters – Yeshua did. Reeds were used for measuring-rods and as beams of scales, or for the scales themselves.

Calamus serves as a reminder for us of the eleven things we need to buy from God – “gold refined in the fire, oil for our lamps etc. It thus reminds us to live by God’s standards.

Relaxing to muscles, soothes inflammation, supportive of respiratory system, helps clear kidney congestion after intoxication.

Oil of calamus has a warm, woody-spicy, earthy scent.
